Maribyrnong River: renaming centenary

On Sunday, 17 March, along with the members for Essendon and Footscray, I attended a celebration to commemorate the renaming of the Saltwater River to the Maribyrnong River in 1913. It was 100 years ago when Essendon River League president Colonel John Evans negotiated the name change, and last Sunday his grandson, Frank Evans, unveiled a plaque and planted a tree on the banks of the Maribyrnong River to commemorate the historic name change. I wish to thank Elaine Brogan and Eve Park of Essendon Historical Society and river tour guide operator Peter Somerville, OAM, for their work in organising Sunday’s celebration. Best wishes to the Maribyrnong River for the next 100 years.
