Carroll & Labor to deliver lifesaving defibrillators
21 August 2014
Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll has today welcomed the announcement that a Labor Government will deliver 1,000 defibrillators to Victorian sports clubs and facilities if elected in November.
“This is terrific news for our local sporting community, and sports clubs right across Victoria,” Mr Carroll said.
Last week, Mr Carroll visited the Aberfeldie Sports Club and was pleased to see a defibrillator already in place.
As local club member John Larkins explained, the defibrillator has already saved a life in Aberfeldie.
“The quick-thinking actions of locals in February were heroic, but this would not have been possible without a defibrillator available at the club.”
“With defibrillators on hand in more public places and sporting facilities like Aberfeldie Sports Club, we will be able to save more lives,” Mr Carroll said.
Cardiac arrest is usually an unexpected event. Every year, 5,000 Victorians go into cardiac arrest while going about their everyday lives, and 20% of these occur in a public place.
“The first step is always to call 000, but when disaster strikes, having a defibrillator on hand can be the difference between life and death.”
Labor’s $2.7 million plan follows calls for more public defibrillators from the Heart Foundation and St. John Ambulance Australia.
Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has made his commitment to funding defibrillators clear. “When cardiac arrest strikes, every minute counts.”
