About Ben

Ben Carroll was born and raised in Airport West where his family have lived for over 40 years.

He attended local schools, St Christopher’s Primary and St Bernard’s College.

With the assistance of a scholarship Ben attended La Trobe University where he completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Politics, before later completing a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws in Global Business Law.

Outside of study, Ben worked part-time at Kmart Airport West for 8 years and while not naturally gifted played over 50 games for the Airport West Football Club.

Ben has over 15 years’ experience in public service, including as a lawyer for the Victorian Government, adviser to Victorian Premier Steve Bracks and helping people in need as a volunteer lawyer with a community legal aid service.

Ben was first elected as the Member for Niddrie on the 24 March 2012 and he is honoured to stand in the Victorian Parliament representing his community and the people of Melbourne’s north-west.

During his time in Parliament, Ben has served on the Law Reform, Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee which undertook a groundbreaking inquiry into the supply and use of crystal methamphetamine, otherwise known as ‘ice’.

Overall the inquiry received 78 submissions, conducted 113 public hearings and heard some 220 witnesses resulting in a two volume, 32 chapter, 900 page report with 54 recommendations – arguably the most up to date and informative report on the drug ‘ice’ to date.

On 23 December 2014 Ben was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Justice.
